Maputo National Park - Ponta do Ouro, Mozambique; 14 September 2023 marks 14 years of International coastal cleanup events in Ponta do Ouro and this date marks the 66th clean-up on record overall The event, which takes place the second week of September was co-ordinated by the Dolphin Encountours Research Center (DERC) in partnership with the Maputo National Park (MNP), the Peace Parks Foundation, Lwandi Surf and Ocean Conservancy.

Cleanup teams met at 08:30 and by 09:30, after registration, tea, cookies and a briefing - crews armed with plastic bags, sponsored by Plastic SA and data cards hit Ponta Beach. Teams A and B headed off in vehicles north, while team C worked the launch site to the border.
Overall almost 10km of our coastline was cleaned. The event was attended by members of the Maputo National Park and APA, together with both local and international volunteers. Fifteen children from the local community and Lwandi Surf attended with a total of 38 participants in all.
A total of 23 bags were filled and 150kg of rubbish, including ropes and many plastics were collected. After some three hours of work, hunger and thirst was generously taken care of with thanks to the sponsorship of packed meals from our friends at Sapphire Sands and Florestina.
